Nebraska State Soccer: Return to Play & COVID-19 Update

Nebraska State Soccer Members:

With Governor Ricketts recent announcement about allowing the return of baseball and softball activities, we wanted to take a moment to address the many questions we have received regarding how this announcement may affect the return of soccer.   We are excited by the Governor’s announcement, but we also understand and appreciate that our sport and our community continues to face significant challenges during this pandemic and that we must all take a cautious approach to return to play safely.   Our focus is, and always will be, the health and safety of our community, and we have been working, and we continue to work, to ensure that we are well prepared to return to play with soccer when it is safe to do so and when we have proper authority to do so.

We have been in direct contact with the Governor’s office and we will continue to work closely and support them as this situation continues to develop.   We have shared with the Governor our Return to Play plan that we have created in coordination with US Soccer and US Youth Soccer.  We feel that our Return to Play plan provides a clear process and guidelines for our members to establish safe situations for players to gradually return to play when it is allowed.  While we have plans in place, we also realize there is a bigger situation and challenges beyond soccer, and recognize the role we need to take as a leader in this community.  We have received questions about various options for training and practices, but with so many challenges still ahead, we will not sanction any soccer activity until the state of Nebraska permits soccer to resume under the directed health measures.

This is, and will continue to be, a challenging time for us all, and we know the many hardships our clubs and communities face.  We are not alone, and need to pull through this together with our state leadership, so we can ensure that when soccer comes back, it comes back in a safe and sensible way.

Finally, please keep in mind that the virus is on its own timeline.  Although we are VERY excited for a return to soccer activity, our hopes and plans for a return to play are always subject to being pushed back as conditions and/or local and federal government policies impact a safe return to playing again.

Based on our planned Return to Play process, we will be sending updated information regarding registration and team formation process within the next week. We hope to see you all safe, healthy and on the field soon.
